I'm going on the Classic Safari in August and was wondering if it was necessary to get local currency in either Kenya or Tanzania? I've read U.S. dollars are widely accepted & some blogs I have read said that it was not really necessary. Thanks...

Hi fitz, In response to your question, U.S. dollars are widely accepted throughout Kenya and Tanzania, therefore there is no need to exchange dollars into local currency. If you wish to use local Kenyan shillings, the easiest foreign currency to exchange in Kenya is the U.S. dollar (cash); note that you will get better rates with larger denominations. Do not change money on the black market or with “money changers” on the street. Please note, though, that it is becoming increasingly difficult in Kenya and Tanzania to use U.S. dollars printed in 2004 or prior. In fact, many hotels, lodges, and shops now insist that you pay with U.S. dollars dated 2005 or later, and the Kenyan and Tanzanian governments now require the same when processing payments for visa fees at airports and border crossings. We strongly recommend that you bring new, crisp bills with you. Should you have further questions, please don't hesitate to contact our Customer Service department, by email: customerservice@odysseys-unlimited.com or toll-free, (888) 370-6765. We wish you a wonderful safari to Kenya and Tanzania.
