My friend and I are having discussion about the need for a passport if you have a Real ID. As I understand it, a passport book is still required for any travel outside the US. My friend is certain that the BMV told her that a passport was no longer required now that she had a Real ID and so she shredded her passport. I recently spend $130 to renew my passport and she says that was totally a waste of money since I have a Real ID. I have searched the internet and can't really find a definitive answer. Can you help clarify?

Hi Melodie, Bottom line: U.S. lcitizens must have a valid passport for travel outside the country. Real ID is valid for domestic travel only ( you can also use your passport for domestic travel). Hope this settles the question for you.

Thank you! I was pretty certain that a passport was still required for travel outside the US. Mucho gracias!
