My husband and I will be taking the Africa's Wildlife tour in June 2019. While I know we'll be touring during the dry season and there is less mosquito activity during that time, we plan to take antimalarial medication and we'll bring some DEET containing insect repellent with us. In reading about malaria and its prevention, a number of articles suggested also spraying the bed netting with Permethrin and spraying the room (and leaving for 30 mins) with sprays such as Peaceful Sleep, Silent Night, Doom, etc. Some of these articles even stated that many camps provide such sprays. Would love input from anyone who has taken this tour (especially if you went during June)about your experience with mosquitoes and the need for all these sprays and what precautions the camps provided. Thanks.

My husband and I went on this tour in August last year. Although we took a can of 40% DEET spray we really did not need it. Every place we stayed provided spray and spray was also provided in the safari vehicles. Also, we never saw a mosquito. It was truly a trip of a lifetime and I'm sure you will love this trip too. To whet your appetite for your trip, here's a link to a video I created of the animals we saw on safari. I shared it with family and friends via a private youtube link.

Thanks for the info. I'll bring our malaria meds and Deet spray and depend upon the camps for any other sprays that may be needed. I was wondering how I was going to pack all the sprays that were being recommended into a 33 lb. duffel bag and still have enough room for clothing. Were laundry services available/provided at the camps? If so, were they expensive? Video was great --- can't wait for our trip!

Yes, laundry facilities were available at every location. We stayed at The Elephant Camp in Zimbabwe because the place Odysseys normally uses was being remodelled so I can't speak for the lodge there. At The Elephant Camp laundry was free. At Chobe Marina Lodge and at Royal Zambezi lodge both places will do laundry for a fee. It was much cheaper at Chobe so do as much laundry as you need there before you go to Zambia. For example, underwear was about 40 cents where as at Royal Zambezi Lodge I think it was $2-$3. Needless to say I only had them wash a pair of pants and a I think 2 blouses. The price for that was $6 for each. You are a captive audience there so they can charge more. Just an FYI, drinks were more expensive there too. As for laundry, all places did a great job. Whatever you leave in the morning to be laundered will be returned that same day around 4-5 pm. I also brought some Woollite packets and did some laundry (socks, underwear) at the lodges. The African sun was hot and whatever I washed dried pretty quickly. If you want to contact me directly, you can email me at avanat@verizon.net.

Thank you, Avanat, for the information on mosquitoes/malaria. We are also going in August of 2019 and appreciate your feedback for that time of the year. I'm hoping that malaria meds won't be necessary for a mosquito target like myself.
