On the Insider's Japan tour, the guide states that we'll need a second, smaller bag for overnight in the ryokan and also for the extension to Hiroshima. It is suggested that we have a wheeled bag. In the practical travel tips, the suggestion is for a soft sided bag that folds inside the larger bag. We typically travel with bags that fit into overhead bins. Does this qualify as a small enough bag for the overnight?
What have others done?

We will be taking this tour in November- I haven't received my practical tips yet, but I have traveled extensively around Japan by train (I live in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan), and I tend to take a small wheeled carryon for overnights. Lighter is better as you will likely have to store the bag overhead on a rack (shinkansen / Hida Wide View Express / express trains), so choose something that is easy to lift should you have to. I normally take a wheeled bag as I don't like putting fabric bags directly down on the floor (which I've had to do during peak travel times / when trains are crowded), and it's easier to navigate through the stations, especially the narrow wickets for train gates.
Hope this helps,
Sarah

Hi bjmillar,
If you'll be traveling only with a wheeled carry-on, that should be fine for the ryokan and the extension. Please note that Practical Tips offers more general travel information; your best bet is to follow the guidelines in the material for your specific trip. Just returned from Japan tour. My total luggage consisted of a Travelpro 21-inch rollaboard (4 wheels) and a Jansport backpack (bookbag). The seat pitch on the trains was big enough that I could leave the rollaboard in front of me (I'm short so I don't need a lot of legroom) but it fit on the overhead rack. I found the 4-wheeled bag easier to handle (can be pushed) as opposed to the 2-wheeled bag that a companion brought (had to be pulled).
